Ghar Dwaar — About This Home

2014 · cotton pulp, acrylic and watercolour — silence, childhood farms, monsoon and chulha

Shambhavi's works are evocative of silence — the silence distilled through her spirit, witnessing the dark sky canopy of vast farms and river from childhood. The inky blackness that engulfed huts and hamlets, the rapier sliver of monsoon lightning, moon gingerly showing its face, long shadows from chulha flames, dawn bustle of the farmer's family, weak dhibri light, the farmer alone in her vast field — ephemeral, incandescent visions that touched her art.

About This Home is an ongoing engagement with cotton paper pulp — formed by hand, coloured through invigorating hues, evoking simple hinterland life far from urban consumption. Her work is silent; the friction of consumption on nature is not. Made after the STPI summer with master papermaker Richard Hungerford, where fingers touched buttery roughness of fresh pulp like two souls meeting. In Delhi with cotton pulp ground, textured, formed by hand — like the mud hut she comes out of, her Home and roots.

Walking in Buddha's footsteps, her art invokes clarity — stepping into lightness, claiming the elemental. This body of work is an invocation to frugality, containment and quiet.
