STPI Singapore

Singapore Tyler Print Institute · 2011 · 3 months with master printers

STPI challenged me to break fresh grounds by exposing me to an immense, fantastic array of possibilities. Along with my collaborators here, I tapped into my intuition and imagination defining new artistic sensibilities. The residency at Singapore Tyler Print Institute opened new vocabularies — hand-beaten pulp, mineral pigments and the alchemy of papermaking.

Working with master printers, I explored paper as material — not just surface but terrain. Each sheet became a site of excavation: layering fibers, ochre, indigo and embedded objects. Finger and hand painting on pulp recalled mud-wall painting; palette changed, iconography shifted, relationship with Earth acquired new vibration. Works entered the MoMA permanent collection, New York. Year: 2011 · Venue: Singapore Tyler Print Institute · Medium: handmade paper, pulp painting, printmaking · Duration: 3 months.
